In response to a request received from the Director of the Hospital Nacional de Niños ¨Carlos Saenz Herrera¨ in Costa Rica and Dr. XXX General Manager of the Caja Costarricense, Drs. Kato and Rivas Vetencourt visited the hospital in August 2015 and had the opportunity to meet medical personnel and see the hospital´s facilities. They learned that the Hospital had had a significant liver transplantation experience a few years ago. They also interviewed pediatric patients on the waiting list and among the children evaluated, Genesis Romero, a 2 year old girl with an advanced and severe diagnosis of biliary atresia that required immediate attention
The case was discussed with the authorities of Hospital Nacional de Niño and an agreement was reached to transplant Genesis with a donated segment of her father´s liver through Fundahigado´s Liver Transplant Program in Venezuela. A large group of doctors from the Center´s transplantation area were selected to shadow the experience as an educational activity. The transplant was successful and the patient along with her family returned to Costa Rica to continue the recovery process.
A second educational activity was undertaken with the participation of doctors from the Hospital Nacional de Niños through a second transplantation done a few weeks later in Caracas. After this activity with FHA, the Hospital Nacional de Niños in Costa Rica reinitiated its liver transplant program in its own facilities.
